If you're on this page, you've probably got an IRS notice on your desk and a slightly elevated heart rate. Most of those letters are routine, not the start of a full audit, and most don't escalate. The path through is methodical, not dramatic.

We work alongside your CPA or EA when an IRS notice or audit lands. Our role is the bookkeeping side: pulling the underlying records together, organizing them in the form the notice is asking for, and getting them to your CPA or EA within the timeframe given. We are not licensed to represent you before the IRS or give tax advice, that's what a CPA, Enrolled Agent, or attorney does under IRS Circular 230, and we make their job possible by handing them clean, organized records.

The first call is fifteen minutes. You read us the notice, we tell you what it looks like in plain terms, and you walk out with a sense of what's involved. From there, you decide if you want to engage us to organize the records, and we'll point you toward a CPA or EA for the response itself if you don't already have one.

Where irs audit support actually helps

The real before-and-afters. Each pain on the left is something we hear most weeks. The fix on the right is what changes once we are running.
  • I got a notice from the IRS and I cannot work out what they actually want
Triage call decodes the notice into plain English: what kind of notice it is, what records they want, the deadline.
  • My books are messy and the notice is asking for documentation
We rebuild the substantiation pack from bank statements, vendor invoices, and source records, organized the way your CPA or EA can use it fastest.
  • I do not want to deal with this alone
We organize the records and coordinate with your CPA or EA. You're not doing the paperwork by yourself.
  • I am scared to open the letter because I think I am in trouble
Most notices are routine. Even when penalties apply, they are usually smaller than the imagination. The triage call is fifteen minutes and free.
  • I have already responded to the IRS once and they have come back with more questions
Follow-up correspondence is part of the engagement. We track every letter, every deadline, every document request, until the matter is closed.

Notices, correspondence audits, and full audits: the difference

Most IRS contact is a notice, not an audit. A common one is a CP2000, where the IRS has seen a mismatch between income reported on a 1099 or W-2 and what showed up on your return, and wants an explanation or correction. These are usually resolved with a written response and supporting documents, often without ever speaking to anyone at the IRS.

A correspondence audit is a step up: the IRS is examining a specific item (a deduction, a credit, a classification) and wants documentation mailed in. A field or office audit is more involved, sometimes requiring an in-person or virtual meeting. These take longer and the bookkeeping work is deeper. Throughout all three, we coordinate with your CPA or EA, who is the one actually corresponding with the IRS on your behalf.

You have rights throughout. The IRS has to give you a reasonable timeframe to respond. Your CPA or EA can request penalty abatement where there's reasonable cause. None of that is mysterious, but knowing what to ask for and when makes a difference, and it's your CPA's or EA's job to navigate that. Ours is making sure they have everything they need, organized and accurate.

How irs audit support with Bookflexy runs

Three steps from first call to the boring monthly rhythm. Boring is the goal here, the books should be the least dramatic part of your week.
  1. Step 1

    15-minute triage call

Read us the notice. We tell you what kind of notice it is and what the IRS is actually asking for.

  2. Step 2

    Records organized

We pull together the records the notice has asked for. If your books need cleanup before anything can be organized, that gets quoted separately as catch-up work.

  3. Step 3

Handoff to your CPA or EA

Organized records go to your CPA or EA for the actual response. If you don't have one, we can point you toward options. If more documentation gets requested, we handle that too.

"I had a letter sitting on my desk for two weeks before I picked up the phone. Fifteen minutes later I knew it was a routine notice and we had a plan. The whole thing closed out in three weeks with no adjustment."

Why US small businesses choose Bookflexy for irs audit support

Confidentiality, by default

Anything you share on the triage call stays with us. We are bound by professional confidentiality. Your CPA, your spouse, the bank: none of them hear anything from us without your say.

AIPB certified

The bookkeeping and records side of any IRS notice is handled by an AIPB-certified bookkeeper. We stay strictly on the records side, we do not offer tax advice or representation.

Records, not opinions

We don't argue tax positions. Your CPA or EA does that. We make sure the underlying records (bank reconciliations, vendor invoices, payroll evidence) are organized and accurate.

Plain English on every notice

IRS correspondence reads opaque even when the underlying matter is small. We translate each notice into what's actually being asked, in normal language.

Organized substantiation

Expense deductions, payroll figures, mileage logs, 1099 income: each kind of substantiation has a format that works best. We pull it in that format.

No panic

We've been through this with other clients. The IRS has a process, you have rights, and there's a path through. Calm beats hurry every time.

Read us the notice on a 15-minute call

No commitment, no cost. Walk away knowing what the notice actually means and what the next step looks like.

Three notices, three responses

Common IRS contact patterns. Each is organized differently.

A CP2000 notice on unreported 1099 income

The IRS has matched a 1099 against your return and found a mismatch. Notice requests an explanation or a corrected figure, with documentation.

What changes

  • Source documents pulled and matched to the reported income
  • 1099s reconciled against your books
  • Records handed to your CPA or EA within the response window
  • Most notices close with no additional tax owed once explained

How pricing works for irs audit support

No flat tiers. Every quote sized to your business. The form takes about 60 seconds and the answer arrives the same day.

IRS notice support is priced hourly rather than as a flat fee, because the scope is set by the IRS, not by us. A simple one-page notice resolved in a week costs very differently from a full audit running across multiple years.

After the 15-minute triage call we give you a written cost estimate based on the scope as the notice has framed it. If the scope expands during the process (the IRS sometimes broadens a request), we tell you before billing changes, not after.

Pricing factor

Notice type

A routine income-matching notice is fast. A formal audit notice with multiple years in scope takes longer.

Pricing factor

Records state

If your books are current, organizing records is fast. If catch-up work is required first, that is quoted separately.

Pricing factor

Number of periods

Single-year notices are smaller than multi-year audits. We size against what the notice actually asks for.

Pricing factor

CPA/EA coordination

Where the matter requires close coordination with your CPA, EA, or attorney, that liaison time is included.

Pricing factor

Substantiation depth

Where source documents need reconstruction (lost receipts, vendor records to chase), the rebuild time adds up.

Pricing factor

Follow-up correspondence

The IRS often comes back with secondary questions. Each round of correspondence is added to the engagement until the matter closes.

What clients say

"I was 14 months behind and I had ignored two IRS notices. I was waking up at 3am thinking about it. The first call with them was the first time I felt like it was actually fixable. Six weeks later we were caught up and they are my regular bookkeeper now."

IRS Audit Support FAQ

Two things to remember

Every account is reconciled and kept tax-ready by an AIPB-certified bookkeeper. Every account is run inside the US, by a US-based bookkeeper. Those two facts shape almost every other decision on this page.
